Your first conversation, step by step

A course from the Academy: AI made easy: your first steps

Let's get practical. Today, you're going to write your very first message to an AI. Follow the steps, there's no catch.

Step 1: open the AI

On a phone, install the ChatGPT or Gemini app from the app store (they're free), or simply open chatgpt.com in your web browser, just like you'd open any other site. And if you'd prefer, ask someone for a hand: there's no shame in that.

Step 2: find where to type

At the bottom of the screen, there's a white bar, like for sending a text message. Tap it: the keyboard appears. That's where it all happens.

Step 3: write whatever comes to mind

For example: "Hello, can you suggest a simple meal idea for tonight?" Then tap the small arrow to send. The reply appears before your eyes a few seconds later.

The secret for busy people: talk instead of type

If typing on the keyboard tires you out, look for the small microphone icon next to the input bar. Tap it, speak normally ("Give me a recipe for gratin dauphinois"), and your words write themselves. Many people now do nothing but that.

Analogy. It's exactly like sending a text to a loved one: you tap the bar at the bottom, type or dictate, and send. The only difference is that the reply arrives in seconds and is always in a good mood.

Key takeaways

  • Everything happens in the input bar at the bottom, just like a text message.
  • You can speak into the mic instead of typing: it's often simpler.
  • There's nothing to break: at worst, you delete and start over.
