What are these "AIs" everyone keeps talking about?
A course from the Academy: AI made easy: your first steps
Go to the quiz ↓You hear about "artificial intelligence" everywhere: on TV, at work, in conversations. Don't worry: behind this big word lies something very simple to use.
A correspondent who answers everything
An AI like ChatGPT is, above all, a conversation. You write a question, just as you'd message a friend, and an answer appears a few seconds later. That's it. No complicated buttons, no manual to read.
You can ask it for a recipe, help understanding a letter, have it explain a tricky word, or simply chat. It replies politely, at any hour, and never tires of your questions.
What it isn't
- It's not a robot that watches or listens to you constantly. It only responds when you write to it.
- It's not paid to get started: the free versions are more than enough.
- There's nothing complicated to install: an app on your phone or a website on your computer, and you're off.
Analogy. Imagine a very knowledgeable, patient neighbour, always available, to whom you can slip a note under the door at any hour: a few seconds later, their reply comes back, clear and friendly. AI is that neighbour, in your phone.
Key takeaways
- Using an AI is simply writing a question and reading the answer.
- It's free to start, and there's nothing complicated to install.
- It does nothing on its own: it waits for you to write to it.
