What tool for what

A course from the Academy: Understanding and creating images

Names change every six months, the families remain. Remember the families, not the names.

Integrated generalists

In ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, image generation is included. A decisive advantage for beginners: you describe, you watch, you correct in plain language in the same conversation. "Darker, and remove the character on the right." No settings to learn.

The specialists

Midjourney, Flux and their ilk deliver higher quality and finer control, at the cost of an interface to learn and often a subscription. Save them for when the generalist really holds you back.

Those that run on your own machine

Some models install on your own computer. Nothing leaves for the internet, no usage limits, but you need a decent graphics card and patience during setup.

Retouching rather than generation

Often overlooked, yet it's the most frequent need: cutting out, erasing an object, extending an image sideways, changing a background. These tools start from a real photograph, which at the same time settles most of the questions from the previous lesson.

The advice

Start with the generalist you already use. Don't pay for anything until you regularly hit a specific limit you can name.

To do now

Generate an image in the tool you have at hand, then correct it in plain language: "darker", "seen from further away".

Complete the lesson

A 4-question quiz: 3 correct answers are enough, plus an exercise to practise. It opens in the Academy, on this same lesson.
