Publishing your podcast on Spotify and Apple

A course from the Academy: Voice, sound and podcasting with AI

Good news: you don't send your episodes one by one to each platform. Everything goes through a single file, the RSS feed.

The RSS feed, the backbone

An RSS feed is a page that platforms re-read regularly: the show's name, cover art and description, then the list of episodes, each with a title, a date and the address of its audio file. You submit this feed once to Spotify and Apple; after that, every new episode added to the feed shows up there on its own.

Two ways to get a feed: a podcast host that builds it for you (the simplest), or your own website generating it (Alyriaz's choice, to stay in control of everything).

What the platforms require

  • Square cover art between 1,400 and 3,000 pixels, JPEG or PNG, readable when tiny on a phone.
  • A category (e.g. Technology), a language, a description.
  • At least one episode already online.
  • An owner email address in the feed: Spotify sends a code there to check the show is yours. Use an inbox you actually read.

The two submissions

  • Spotify: in Spotify for Creators, "add an existing show", paste the feed address, enter the code received by email. The show usually appears within a few hours.
  • Apple Podcasts: in Podcasts Connect, with an Apple ID, "new show" then the feed address. Apple reviews the show, often in one to five days.
Analogy. The RSS feed is a newspaper subscription. You don't carry each issue to the newsstand: the newsstand is subscribed and receives every new issue as soon as it's out.

Titles that help listeners

Number your episodes and give them a real title: "Episode 1 · The week AI prices melted" says both where we are and what it's about. If you publish in two languages, create two separate shows, clearly named, for example "(Français)" and "(English)".

Key takeaways

  • A single RSS feed, submitted once, feeds every platform.
  • Square cover of 1,400 to 3,000 px, category, language, at least one episode.
  • The owner email receives verification codes: it must be read.
  • Numbered, titled episodes; one show per language.
