What AI really changes for a small organisation

A course from the Academy: AI at work: the small business guide

Forget the slogans. For a small business, AI is neither a magic revolution nor a gadget: it's an ultra-fast office worker, very good at certain tasks and worth keeping an eye on for others. Here's the honest lay of the land.

Where the gains are immediate

  • Writing. Annotated quotes, delicate emails, product sheets, social media posts, job ads: AI produces a clean first draft in seconds. You review, tweak, send. Typical gain: hours every week.
  • Summarising. Condensing a 40-page tender, a supplier contract, a regulation: it pulls out the essentials and answers your questions on it.
  • Customer service. Drafting replies to recurring questions, politely rephrasing a refusal, defusing an unhappy customer.
  • Ideas. Product names, communication angles, possible customer objections before a meeting: a thinking partner available at any hour.

Where to be wary of the hype

"AI will replace your accountant and double your revenue": no. It knows neither your customers, nor your trade, nor your figures, and it sometimes gets things wrong with confidence. Real gains come from precise, repetitive tasks, not an overnight miracle transformation.

Analogy. AI is a brilliant intern hired for zero euros: fast, well-read, never tired, but with no knowledge of your company and no responsibility. You hand it the drafts, never the signature.

Key takeaways

  • Real, immediate gains: writing, summarising, customer service, ideas.
  • Promises of miracle transformation are marketing.
  • The golden rule: AI produces, a human reviews and decides.
