Provenance (C2PA)
Embedding, at the moment of a file's creation, where it came from and how it has been modified. A common standard is rolling out among device makers and software vendors. The asymmetry matters: provenance proves origin when it is present, but its absence proves nothing.
In other words
The original label on a product. Its presence reassures, its absence does not condemn.

- From today, all AI-generated images must carry an invisible signature in California.
On 2 August 2026, California's SB 942 law comes into force: generative AI providers with over one million monthly users in the state must embed a provenance marker in every image, video and audio they produce, and offer a free public detection tool. We explain what this changes in practice.
