Dual-use
Describes a technology that can be used both to protect and to harm: the same AI model that helps fix vulnerabilities can help exploit them. It is this risk that is pushing labs to restrict access to their most capable models.
In other words
A kitchen knife: essential for cooking, dangerous in the wrong hands, and yet it is exactly the same object.

- The week of extraordinary claims
Week in review, 7–13 September 2026: Navier-Stokes, attribution disputes, Mistral, Suno v6, and data centres leaving the grid.
- A computer worm designed by a small team with the help of models
Researchers have shown that self-propagating malware could be designed by a small team assisted by models. We analyse what this change in scale implies, without technical detail.
- A major mathematical proof, obtained with AI and verified by machine
A mathematician from NYU and a researcher from Anthropic have published a proof of finite-time blow-up for the 3D Euler equations, obtained with the help of models and formally verified. We explain why the verification changes everything.
- Can security research be dangerous?
A security research method has turned out to be directly usable as an attack tool. We examine the dual-use dilemma, the responses built by other disciplines, and what AI is missing.
- A security research tool turned into a master key
A researcher has shown that a technique from security research could be turned into a universal attack template, with success rates of 84 to 100% on the most vulnerable models tested. We analyse the mechanism and what it reveals.
- Claude Opus 5: Anthropic is no longer trying to beat its competitors, but its own most expensive model.
Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on 24 July 2026, a model that approaches Fable 5's performance for half the price, at the unchanged rate of Opus 4.8. We break down the benchmarks, the effort dial that changes cost management, and what this positioning reveals about the new phase of the AI race.
