The settings that actually exist

A course from the Academy: Your data, and what becomes of it

Go to the quiz ↓

The names differ from one service to another, but the settings are the same. Look for them in the settings, often under "Data" or "Privacy".

1. Opt out of training

Often labelled "Improve the model for everyone" or "Help improve". Untick it: the service doesn't change at all. This is the most useful of the four settings.

2. Disable history

Your conversations are no longer saved. Beware the downside: you won't find them again either, nor across devices. Reserve this for sensitive exchanges, not everyday use.

3. Temporary conversations

The best compromise, and the least known. An on-demand mode, conversation by conversation: it is neither stored nor used, and your other conversations remain intact. The equivalent of private browsing.

4. Delete

A conversation, or the entire account. Deleting an account also deletes the associated data, with a technical delay of a few weeks for backups.

The key point

Unticking training only applies to the future. What has already been used cannot be removed from an already trained model: it would need to be retrained entirely. That's a technical limitation, not bad faith.

What to do now

Open the settings of the service you use, data section. Untick training. Note along the way where temporary conversations are located.
