What is an "Agent" compared with ChatGPT?

A classic chatbot like ChatGPT works like a telephone adviser: you ask a question, it answers, end of story. If you want it to sort files, you have to do it yourself by following its advice.

OpenClaw is different. It is an AI Agent. You can think of it as an office employee with virtual arms. If you tell it "Sort my holiday folder by geographical date and send my mother an email with the best photos", it will literally open the folders, look at the metadata, create the file, open the mail app, type the text and send it.

The OpenClaw phenomenon

Why is OpenClaw making so much noise in early 2026 (more than 150,000 "Like" mentions on the GitHub code platform)? Because it is free and open source. Until now, these powerful virtual assistants belonged to big companies. OpenClaw belongs to the community.

"Skills"

The system works like Lego bricks. You add "Skills" to it according to your needs. For example, these include:

  • Browser Skill: Gives it the right to go and click around the internet and search for information.
  • Files Skill: Gives it the right to handle your local documents.
  • Messaging Skill: Lets you send it orders directly via WhatsApp or Discord.

But be careful, these examples are by no means the be-all and end-all. OpenClaw's real strength is its flexibility. If you give it a task and it lacks the tools to carry it out, it is capable of navigating the internet on its own to find and install the missing plugins. Even more impressive: if it cannot find an existing tool, it can directly write code to create its own bespoke "Skill" in order to solve your problem.

What's new in April 2026: Vision and Privacy 🆕

Recent weeks have been marked by two major community updates. The first is the integration of Vision (advanced Computer Vision): OpenClaw can now "see" your screen in the same way a human does. If no API is available, it is capable of spotting a button visually and clicking on it with the magic mouse.

The second is local (offline) execution. OpenClaw's huge current advantage over its proprietary competitors (such as Devin or even Claude Code) is that it can now run with lightweight models directly on your own graphics card. The result: the agent handles your personal folders, but absolutely no data leaves your computer or is sent to a cloud!

Security Warning ⚠️
Giving "the keys to the house" (control of your mouse and keyboard) to an AI is not without risk. If OpenClaw makes a mistake, it can delete an important document. Fortunately, it is designed to systematically ask you for confirmation (human-in-the-loop) before so-called destructive actions.
